CELEBRITY HAIRSTYLIST JOHNNY WRIGHT JOINS ZURIWORKS FOR A HAIR-RAISING CAMPAIGN: Big CHOP to STOP CANCER
Black women are rarely asked to cut their hair to raise cancer awareness. Big Chop to Stop Cancer aims to change that by asking black women, and their allies, to cut their hair to raise cancer awareness. Aligned with Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration, the “Big Chop to Stop Cancer” campaign seeks to dispel myths and misconceptions about cancer by asking women to be a part of a dialog-building campaign where people share their knowledge and experiences to teach people about the reality of cancer. A play on the natural hair term, “the big chop,” the Big Chop to Stop Cancer asks black women, of all hair types to cut their hair, and raise their collective voices in a call to action to their communities to improve their general knowledge around cancer while simultaneously challenging misconceptions about black women and their hair.
Who: Johnny Wright is a stylist to the stars and Michelle Obama and cancer warriors and their allies. ZuriWorks™ for Women’s Health works to unite the health, beauty, and arts industries in order to save women’s lives from cancer by raising awareness, increasing screening, reducing delays in treatment, and empowering women living with cancer to live well.
What: To kick off the seven month campaign, Johnny Wright offers every woman a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – to have her hair cut and styled like a First Lady. Wright, national spokesperson for Big Chop to Stop Cancer, is auctioning his services at www.bit.ly/chopcancer to provide customized wigs and cancer support services, and support ZuriWorks for Women’s Health (www.zuriworks.org). Winners will debut their “big chops” hairstyles at a reception following the event.
When: The chopping begins at 1PM on March 14. TV and radio interviews begin at 1:30. Press will witness documentary filming of individuals who will be spotlighted as they share their experience, strength, and hope to teach others about cancer.
Where: Immortal Beloved Salon, 1457 Church St., Washington, DC.
Why: Aligned with Target 5 of World Cancer Declaration, the Big Chop to Stop Cancer aims to dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer. The goal is to create much-needed dialog among black women in order to improve early detection and screening rates, reduce delays in treatment, and empower those living with cancer to live well. The campaign pays tribute to the courage and spirit of the millions of black women facing the challenging road ahead of cancer treatment and recovery.
