Community Cinema kicks off its new season in September with three previews from the upcoming series“HALF THE SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” premiering on PBS starting October 1 (and on WHUT October 11). This is the 7th season of Community Cinema in Washington, DC which continues to grow in the nation’s capital. This season we welcome the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital, a venue partner for Women and Girls Lead films for 2012 – 2013 including “Half the Sky…”
In addition to our series partners, Community Cinema [DC] also welcomes our 2nd season Women and Girls Lead film partners (that includes “Half the Sky….”):American Association of University Women (AAUW), Girl Scouts of the National Capital Region, OneBlue.org, National Capital Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women, Global Campaign for Education US Chapter, Institute for Policy Studies, Women In Film and Video (DC)
“HALF THE SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” is based on Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s best-selling book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
In the series six talented actress-advocates — Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, Diane Lane,America Ferrera, and Olivia Wilde — join Kristof as he travels to Asia and Africa to meet face-to-face with inspiring individuals working to bring about change and the women and girls who confront extreme gender inequality in their daily lives. Women and girls around the globe face threats — trafficking, prostitution, violence, and discrimination — every day of their lives. As we see in Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, hope endures as fearless women and men are developing innovative ways to turn the tide.
Each Community Cinema event will feature an episode from the “HALF THE SKY…” series followed by discussion and other activities based on the theme of the event.
Sunday, September 2 at 3 PM, the Washington DC Jewish Community Center presents the “Education” episode featuring Gabrielle Union with Kristof in Cambodia. Educators who register for the event will receive a gift bag of ITVS Classroom resources. Door prizes at the event include an invitation to a Washington premiere event for “Half the Sky…” with Sheryl WuDunnand America Ferrera. Click on this link for more information.
Monday, September 17 at 7 PM, the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hosptial presents a screening of “Half the Sky….” Built in 1864 to serve critical hospital needs during the Civil War, this Capital Hill landmark building has been transformed into Hill Center, a vibrant, campus-like hub for cultural enrichment, lifelong learning, and civic engagement. Saturday, September 30 at 5 PM, Busboys and Poetshosts a screening of the “Half the Sky…” episode focusing on trafficking and featuring Meg Ryan with Kristof. A Q&A and discussion about global and local human trafficking issues will follow the film screening.
