CPB Dissolves; WHUT Carries On
WHUT continues it’s mission to provide original programming and community events to the DC Metro Region
After 58 Years of Service, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) closes following congressional defunding. WHUT continues its mission to be YOUR STATION, bringing YOUR STORIES.
ABOUT CPB
For almost half a century, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) partnered with WHUT and PBS to serve communities large and small in every corner of the country. CPB recently announced it will be closing its doors for good in January. But WHUT and PBS are not going away. Together, we are committed to building on CPB’s legacy and maintaining the trusted programming, public service, and community empowerment that have been at the core of our mission from day one for generations to come. But to do that, we need your help.
WHERE WHUT STANDS
Although the loss of federal funding has had an impact, and the consequences are real, WHUT is not going anywhere! Since Congress voted to eliminate CPB’s funding, WHUT members have stepped up in extraordinary ways. During our end of year campaign alone, we obtained 379 new donors (first time donors to WHUT) of which more than 60 of the donors became sustainers, and 10 donors gave $1000 or more. At the same time, it would be misleading to suggest that this growth fully replaces what was lost which is why your support means more to us now than ever.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
The best way to support WHUT today is to become a member and join countless Viewers Like You who’ve made PBS #1 in public trust for 22 straight years and PBS KIDS the most trusted educational media brand in America. Your membership makes WHUT possible, helps keep your neighbors safe with critical information during emergencies, and even gives you access to Passport, putting over 6,000 hours of dramas, documentaries, and more right at your fingertips.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
WHUT, the nation’s only Public Broadcasting Television station licensed to and operated by a historically Black University, will continue to deliver educational, entertaining and intellectually stimulating multi‐cultural and intergenerational programming to the public in the Metro DC region. The station endeavors to underscore Howard University’s commitment to excellence in Truth and Service.
We will continue to bring you:
• WHUT Original programming that reflects YOUR STORIES, like Decades, The Legacy Series: Living a Legacy, and We Are Here.
• Your favorite PBS shows like Finding Your Roots, The Porter, and Nature.
• PBS KIDS shows like Lyla in the Loop, Sesame Street, and Daniel the Tiger
• In-person community events like Fam Fest at Howard Homecoming, Black Women Soar, and free screenings of our latest educational films.
Fam Fest 2025
We’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support you showed us in 2025, especially in the past several months. But we still need your help spreading the word to friends and family that we are here to stay. Ask them to join you by becoming a member so that, together, you can ensure generations to come will be able to depend on WHUT, as well. Thank you!
