Howard University’s Opening Convocation: A Milestone in Student-Led Media and Scholarship

What happens when tradition meets innovation? At Howard University, it looks like this year’s Opening Convocation, a historic event that not only welcomed the academic year but also made history behind the camera.

Howard University’s Opening Convocation is always one of the most anticipated events of the year. This fall, it featured a powerful keynote by Sherrilyn Ifill, the Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Esq. Endowed Chair in Civil Rights. Her message highlighted the enduring fight for justice and the responsibility of Howard students and faculty to carry forward the university’s mission of truth and service.

But the 2025 convocation wasn’t just about what happened on stage — it was also about who brought it to life for viewers. For the first time ever, the entire program was livestreamed and recorded by an all-student crew.

Behind the Scenes

Members of the Spotlight Television Network, a student-led organization sponsored by WHUT and the Cathy Hughes School of Communications, took charge of the production. From camera operation to sound design to livestream management, students were at the helm — turning classroom lessons into professional-level execution. Their work represents Howard’s dual legacy: excellence in scholarship and leadership in media innovation.
