Collective Impact

These efforts highlight the station’s philanthropic efforts and our commitment to diverse communities.  Amplifying voices that are often underrepresented and empowering individuals through programs like Black Women Soar, Caregivers, and Dinner and a Movie (PBS show screenings).

Black Women Soar

Black Women Soar is WHUT's Women's History Month event that celebrates Black women who are using their purposes to light the way for our future stars. One special aspect of the event is every honoree and adult special guest is asked to bring a mentee to promote the spirit of paying it forward.  We started in 2023 with funds from a grant that we received from MPT's Harriet Tubman Visions of Freedom film and have since adopted it as a staple program.

In 2024, we celebrated women in sports using The Golden Year as our centerpiece for the event. In 2025 we celebrated women in the field of Civic Engagement.

Caregiving

Caregiving brings audiences into the daily experiences of six family and professional caregivers across the U.S. as they share the realities associated with providing care full-time and the often-complicated challenges and extraordinary moments, including joy, that are part of the care relationship. The film features Matthew (NY), a young father who became both his wife and son’s primary caregiver overnight after his wife experienced cancer and a debilitating stroke; Jacob (FL), a 14-year-old who, along with his father, shares the role of caregiver for his mom; Tracy (CO), a young woman balancing the transition from daughter to caregiver for her father, who has dementia; and Zulma (NY), a paid home health aide who has become like family to Sherril, who has multiple sclerosis, after years of caring for her — while Zulma also has her own family to care for after long hours of commuting.

dinner and a movie

WHUT was honored to host a reception celebrating the extraordinary contributions of Black women in the fields of civic engagement and activism. This event not only recognized their achievements but also provided a platform for these trailblazers to mentor and guide young aspiring professionals. By acknowledging and empowering these emerging leaders, WHUT aimed to inspire them to continue their courageous efforts in a society that often overlooks their contributions. The event included a networking opportunity, a fireside chat, and a pinning ceremony where the emphasis was on "lighting the way" for the mentors while offering an inspirational charge for the mentees.
