Community Engagement
Community is at the heart of what we do. Through signature events like FamFest at Howard University’s Homecoming, Summer of Adventure at The National Harbor, and engaging PBS show screenings, we bring families together and create lasting connections. These initiatives enrich lives, celebrate culture, and foster meaningful engagement with audiences of all ages.
FamFest at Howard University’s Homecoming
WHUT hosted FamFest, an event focused on children and families, to celebrate Howard University's Homecoming in collaboration with WHUR. As the only Public Broadcasting Station licensed to a historically Black university, it is essential for our station to represent and engage in this important tradition of intergenerational cultural community building. FamFest featured iconic elements of Homecoming that unite alumni, promote legacy, foster interest in higher education, and encourage both learning and play. This distinctive experience included PBS KIDS resources, live performances, and a variety of family-friendly activities.
Summer of Adventure
Building on the successful partnership with National Harbor from last summer, WHUT hosted the Summer of Possibilities Camp Experience at the Harbor, offering family fun for everyone. These “Screen and Play” events included screenings of our favorite PBS Kids shows, an interactive community engagement activity, and special giveaways!
dinner and a movie
WHUT was honored to host a reception celebrating the extraordinary contributions of Black women in the fields of civic engagement and activism. This event not only recognized their achievements but also provided a platform for these trailblazers to mentor and guide young aspiring professionals. By acknowledging and empowering these emerging leaders, WHUT aimed to inspire them to continue their courageous efforts in a society that often overlooks their contributions. The event included a networking opportunity, a fireside chat, and a pinning ceremony where the emphasis was on "lighting the way" for the mentors while offering an inspirational charge for the mentees.
