Celebrate Juneteenth with WHUT: Honoring Freedom Through Storytelling, Music, and Community
Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the enduring pursuit of freedom, celebrate Black resilience, and honor the rich cultural contributions of African Americans. At WHUT, Juneteenth is more than a single day—it’s part of our ongoing commitment to uplifting Black stories, preserving our history, and connecting our community through meaningful programming and events.
This June, viewers can tune in to a month of special programming celebrating Black Music Month, featuring stories that explore the artists, innovators, and cultural movements that have shaped generations. From music-centered documentaries and performances to locally produced programs highlighting the voices of the DMV, WHUT continues its mission of bringing authentic Black stories to the forefront. Viewers can also enjoy That DC Sound, Juneteenth Jamboree, Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, and American Masters.
The celebration extends beyond the screen with opportunities to gather and commemorate together.
On Friday, June 19, WHUT will participate in Juneteenth Community Day, a family-friendly celebration featuring community engagement, cultural activities, and opportunities to honor the legacy of emancipation and Black achievement. The event takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and welcomes attendees of all ages.
The festivities continue on Saturday, June 20, with the 2nd Annual Freedom to Flip Out, a unique community event that combines fun, fellowship, and friendly competition in celebration of Juneteenth. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., participants can connect with neighbors while enjoying an afternoon of games and entertainment.
In addition to WHUT’s special programming and community events, there are several free opportunities throughout the Washington region to honor Juneteenth through culture, history, music, and community engagement.
The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum will host a two-day Juneteenth celebration featuring live performances, spoken word, workshops, family activities, food demonstrations, and community conversations that celebrate Black history and culture. The free event transforms the museum grounds into a neighborhood gathering focused on freedom, creativity, and connection.
