Grab Your Walking Shoes: Passport DC with PBS KIDS Is Made for Families

Passport DC is back—and this year, WHUT and PBS KIDS are making it easier (and way more fun) for families to explore the world together.

On May 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., WHUT is teaming up with Events DC to bring families a kid-first take on one of DC’s biggest cultural celebrations: Passport DC with PBS KIDS.

If you’ve ever loved Passport DC but worried about long lines, tired little legs, or figuring out where to start—this experience is for you.

A Passport Adventure Designed with Kids in Mind

Instead of trying to see everything at once, families are invited to join a guided, PBS KIDS–style walking tour led by WHUT staff who know how kids learn best: through curiosity, play, and hands-on discovery.

The route includes a thoughtfully chosen group of embassies that are especially welcoming for children, with activities like:

  • Live music and dancing

  • Crafts and coloring stations

  • Cultural demonstrations

  • Traditional food samples

  • Photo moments and games

Turn Waiting Time into Learning Time

Let’s be honest—waiting is part of Passport DC. WHUT is flipping that into an opportunity with a free Adventure Guide packed with simple, playful activities families can use while walking or standing in line.
The guide includes:

  • While You Walk: observation games, scavenger hunts, and conversation starters

  • While You Wait: short stories and videos about world cultures

Extend the Learning at Home: printable language cards, PBS KIDS games, and activities to keep the fun going

It’s an easy way to keep kids engaged—and learning—without screens taking over the day.

More Than an Event—It’s a Family Moment

Passport DC with PBS KIDS is part of WHUT’s growing FamFun approach to community engagement, which brings families together through joyful, educational experiences like FamWatch, FamFest, and FamPlay.

With support from Events DC and leadership from Cheryl Crowell, Senior Manager of Cultural Affairs, this collaboration reflects a shared goal: making DC’s cultural events feel welcoming, accessible, and fun for everyone—especially families with young children.

Let’s Explore the World—Together

This May, families don’t have to choose between fun and learning. With Passport DC with PBS KIDS, they get both.
Bring the kids. Bring your curiosity. Bring comfortable shoes.
And get ready to travel the world—right here in DC.
