MAY PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS

This May, WHUT celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM). We will also be airing Howard University’s 2026 Commencement LIVE, along with other original Howard and Washington DC based programming.

Get into the summer spirit with concerts from The Pointer Sisters, Billy Joel, Supertramp, and Barbara Streisand.

We conclude the month with Memorial Day celebrations featuring 33 Black Frog and a documentary on the Tuskegee Airmen.

4pm – Season 2 of Workin it Out with Dr. Vanessa Weaver debuts.

12pm – The Sunday Special stacks and double-pumps the 4-part series Great Migrations: A People on the Move. It explores how a series of Black migrations have shaped the U.S. From waves of Black Americans to the North-and back South-to immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean, movement is a defining feature of the Black experience.

8pm – Season 2 of Workin it Out with Dr. Vanessa Weaver airs in prime time. 

9pm – Immutable is new from PBS Plus. It follows a group of students from the Washington Urban Debate League as they fight to find their voices in a world that too often tries to silence them. Against the backdrop of a city marked by inequality, these young debaters confront daily challenges that range from housing instability to neurodivergence. For some, debate is a path to college. For others, it’s a lifeline.

7pm - American Muslims: A History Revealed is a new 6-part Plus series that reveals and explores the early history of Muslims in America. It has many DC connections, including the filmmakers are from DC and Bethesda.

1pm - Leadership and Legacy: A Conversation with Mayor Muriel Bowser: This conversation explores the person behind the leadership. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has led one of the most visible cities in the country, and we seek to understand the journey—what shaped her, what sustained her, and what she has learned along the way. This is a conversation about growth, perspective, and what it means to lead while still evolving as a person.

5pm - Unveiled: Daisy Bates and Johnny Cash is new. It takes us to the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall and follows the creation and installation of two new statues from Arkansas and celebrates the enduring legacies of two of the state's most iconic figures. Daisy Bates, who courageously led the fight for civil rights, and Johnny Cash.

8pm – We bring back the 3-part PBS series Voces American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos. Join actor John Leguizamo on a quest to uncover Latino and Latina heroes and their contributions. In this three-part series, Leguizamo takes viewers on a captivating journey, delving into both well-known and lesser-known stories of Latino history, spanning thousands of years, from the Ancient Empires to the present, and shining a light on the rich and often overlooked history of Latinos.

9pm – For Memorial Day we have the 1-hour version of 33 Black Frog. 

10pm - Green Box: At the Heart of War has a DC connection. One of the Tuskegee Airmen interviewed in the documentary, Gen. Charles McGee, lives in DC and the filmmakers plan to do local media outreach.

Pledge begins. 

11am - Of the People: Women of the Civil Rights Movement is new. Discover the powerful stories of Fannie Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Dolores Huerta and Yuri Kochiyama four extraordinary women whose courage, intellect and activism helped shape the course of the civil and human rights movements in America.


8pm – Also new is Pointer Sisters: So Excited! Celebrate the multi-Grammy Award-winning trendsetters in a 2024 performance spanning 50 years of hits. Three generations of Pointers bring the unbridled joy that shot "Automatic," "I'm So Excited," and "Jump (For My Love)" to the top of the charts.

11pm – From APT we have another new music special, Supertramp - Live in Paris. Filmed at the Pavillon de Paris, it captures this memorable show, with the legendary band performing at their absolute peak.

5pm – New from PBS is Barbra Streisand: Timeless – Live in Concert. Enjoy a magical concert filmed on New Year's Eve in 1999 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Staged as an original, Broadway-style musical in which Barbra looks back at her past,

10pm – New from APT is Billy Joel: The 100th: Live at Madison Square Garden. It celebrates Joel’s record-breaking 100th consecutive residency performance at Madison Square Garden.
