WHUT and Groovy Archives Present: Hidden in the Credits

This Black Music Month, WHUT is inviting audiences to look beyond the spotlight and discover the creative forces who helped shape the music we know, love, and live by.

In partnership with Zipporah Bright—historian, journalist, collector, aspiring DJ, and creator of Groovy Archives—WHUT presents Hidden in the Credits, a special four-part short-form digital series celebrating the often-overlooked contributors behind iconic Black music.

From producers and writers to arrangers and musical architects, Hidden in the Credits shines a light on the voices whose names may not always be front and center, but whose impact is woven into the soundtrack of generations.

Hidden In the Credits

About the Series

While artists often receive the recognition they deserve, music is rarely created alone. Hidden in the Credits explores the collaborative brilliance that exists behind the scenes—spotlighting the creative minds who helped shape sound, style, and culture.

Across four weekly episodes, the series dives into the stories, influence, and legacy of contributors who played key roles in Black music history. Wherever possible, the series highlights individuals with DMV and/or Howard University ties, reinforcing WHUT’s commitment to local storytelling and cultural preservation.

This Black Music Month, featured contributors include:

  • Makeba Riddick-Woods

  • Esther Dean

  • Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff

  • The late Richard Smallwood

Each profile blends music history with cultural reflection, offering viewers a deeper understanding of how these creatives helped shape songs that continue to resonate today.

Hidden in the Credits also reflects WHUT’s broader mission: to amplify stories that educate, inspire, and honor Black culture in all its complexity. Through short-form storytelling, the series creates space for learning, appreciation, and connection—especially for younger audiences discovering this history for the first time.
