Fam Fest at Howard University Homecoming
October brings an exciting mix of local storytelling, Howard University programming, music, culture, history, and thought-provoking documentaries to WHUT. From Hispanic Heritage Month and Howard Homecoming to neighborhood stories rooted in the DMV, this month's lineup continues WHUT's mission to educate, inspire, and connect communities.
Celebrating Local Stories and DMV Voices
October begins with programs highlighting community, culture, and local history.
On Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Legacy Series: Living A Legacy explores Black Georgetown, highlighting one of Washington's most significant historic Black communities and the people who helped shape its legacy.
Viewers can also explore the history of Barry Farm on Tuesday, October 6 at 8:00 PM through Barry Farm: Community, Land and Justice in Washington, a documentary examining the neighborhood's legacy and residents' fight for justice and community preservation.
Howard University Homecoming Takes Center Stage
WHUT celebrates Howard University Homecoming Week from October 11–17 with a special lineup highlighting scholars, artists, authors, and alumni.
Featured programs include:
The Journey with Dr. Wayne Frederick: Training the Next Generation of Doctors airing throughout the week.
Golden Year: Howard Women's Basketball, showcasing the legacy and success of one of Howard's storied athletic programs.
Alpha Kappa Alpha: A Legacy of Service, celebrating the impact of the historic organization founded at Howard University.
Conversations featuring Dr. Ibram Kendi, Eric Holder, Dr. Sharon Malone, Edwidge Danticat, and Cole Arthur Riley.
Music and Cultural Legacy
Music remains a central focus throughout October.
On Friday, October 2 at 8:00 PM, In Their Own Words captures DC jazz elders sharing firsthand memories of the city's rich jazz history.
The month also features multiple broadcasts of Kings of Music: A Royal Concert, beginning Sunday, October 11 at 9:00 PM and continuing throughout the month.
Jazz fans can enjoy Bird: Not Out of Nowhere on Friday, October 23 at 9:00 PM, exploring the life and music of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker.
Closing the month is Quincy Jones: Music Man on Friday, October 30 at 9:00 PM, honoring one of the most influential figures in music history.
Exploring Heritage and Global Perspectives
Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15 with Voces: Omara – Cuba's Legendary Diva, airing Wednesday, October 7 at 9:00 PM, followed by Eliades Ochoa: From Cuba to the World at 10:00 PM. These programs celebrate two internationally acclaimed Cuban artists whose work helped introduce audiences worldwide to Cuban music and culture.
October also includes travel programming such as Rick Steves Best of Europe Day on October 4, featuring destinations including Rome, Paris, London, and Iceland.
Technology, Community, and the Future
Later in the month, Independent Lens: The Ghost in the Machine investigates the origins of artificial intelligence, questions of privacy, and who controls the rapidly growing technology. The documentary airs on Thursday, October 22 at 9:00 PM and again on Saturday, October 24 at 5:00 PM.
